The poem Scachs d´amor, Valencia c. 1475, sheet 11r, describes the movements of the queen for the first time, and (which is just as important) states unequivocally that it is Fenollar, Vinyoles, and Castellví who have created the new piece and hence new chess.
We are here witnessing the forging of a new form of chess, which the poets are very clear about (verse 54):
(Our game wishes to adorn itself with a new and surprising style).
In the right-hand margin, Fenollar explains what this new surprising style consists of:
(I declare that the queen moves like all (the pieces) except the knight).
The major reform of chess had already been announced in the first verse after the presentation, (f. 1v, Castellví):
The poets are aware of the revolution caused by their ideas, and make it very clear that they are proposing the new playing style themselves. There can therefore be no doubt that the date of the creation of Scachs d´amor (1475) is likewise that of the creation and birth of modern chess.
